The Guide

The unwritten rules of Lake Norman.

A practical, opinionated, slightly Southern guide to actually using the lake — from your first slip to your fifteenth raft-up.

Chapter 01

Your first slip.

Waitlists at the southern marinas (Peninsula, Westport, Skipper's) run 6–18 months. Northern marinas are typically same-season availability. Covered slips command a 60–110% premium.

Chapter 02

Etiquette.

Idle inside any cove. Stay 100 feet off any dock at any speed. Surf only in the main channel. Always wave back.

Chapter 03

The seasons.

March — shake-down. April–May — the lake's quietest, prettiest months. June–August — peak. September — the regulars' favorite. October–November — sweater cruising. December–February — sunset cocktails on covered docks.

Chapter 04

Sunset cruise route.

From Ramsey Creek, north past the Peninsula, under the I-77 bridge, around Davidson Point, raft up off Reed Creek, return as the lights come on across Cornelius. Forty-five minutes, four seasons a year.

Chapter 05

Storm awareness.

Summer afternoon thunderstorms build quickly. Watch the western horizon. The lake's open fetch turns benign chop into 3-foot wind waves in fifteen minutes.
