Lake Life

Thirty-two thousand acres of clear Carolina water.

A complete field guide to boating Lake Norman — twelve major marinas, three yacht clubs, public launches, wakesurf coves, fishing reports, and seasonal rituals.

Chapter 01

The marinas.

Lake Norman is ringed by a dozen full-service marinas, each with its own personality — from the white-glove yacht clubs of the southern basin to the unpretentious working harbors of the northern coves. Covered slips at The Peninsula and The Point can list above $250,000.

  • Peninsula Yacht Club — Cornelius
  • Westport Marina — Denver
  • Morningstar Marinas — Mooresville
  • Pier 88 Boat & Yacht Club — Mooresville
  • Inlet Harbor Marina — Sherrills Ford
  • Mountain Creek Marina — Sherrills Ford
  • Blythe Landing — Huntersville
  • Skipper's Landing — Cornelius
  • Trump National Marina — The Point
  • Lake Norman Marina — Sherrills Ford
  • Holiday Marina — Sherrills Ford
  • Stutts Marina — Mooresville

Chapter 02

Public boat ramps.

Nine public access areas span all four sides. Stumpy Creek and Pinnacle serve the State Park's northern coves; Blythe Landing and Ramsey Creek anchor the south.

  • Ramsey Creek (Cornelius)
  • Blythe Landing (Huntersville)
  • Stumpy Creek (Troutman)
  • Pinnacle Access (Troutman)
  • Beatties Ford Access
  • Long Island Access
  • NC 150 Bridge Access
  • McCrary Access
  • Hager Creek Access

Chapter 03

Wake, ski, and surf.

The main channel's broad fetch makes Lake Norman one of the South's best wakesurf venues. Local etiquette keeps surf passes to the deepest center coves between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.; before and after, the no-wake shoreline is yours.

Chapter 04

Fishing the lake.

Largemouth, spotted, and white bass dominate, with a strong striper fishery. The thermal discharge at McGuire keeps a year-round bite on the north side; spring spawns concentrate on the rocky points of the southern basin.

Chapter 05

Sailing & paddle.

The Lake Norman Yacht Club has hosted Olympic-class sailing since 1959. Summer Sundays the southern basin fills with Lightning, Thistle, and J/22 fleets. Paddleboard and kayak rentals operate from Ramsey Creek, Blythe, and Inlet Harbor.

Chapter 06

Safety, seasons, and the rules.

Water temperatures peak at 86°F in August and bottom near 47°F in February. Required: a Type III PFD per passenger, navigation lights between sunset and sunrise, and a boater education certificate for any captain born after January 1, 1988.
