Swim season, honestly assessed.

Locals start swimming when the surface crosses 70°F, which usually happens in the second week of May, and stop when it drops back under 70°F, typically in the third week of October. That is a five-month window — longer than most people assume. Peak comfort is late June through early September, when the coves sit at 84 to 88 degrees and feel closer to a heated pool than a lake. Children and dock-jumpers push the season at both ends; the public beach at Lake Norman State Park runs guarded hours from late May to early September.

The thermocline and why it governs summer.

From late May through October the lake stratifies into three layers: a warm surface layer, a sharp transition zone, and a cold, oxygen-poor bottom. The thermocline generally settles between 18 and 28 feet. Everything that matters in summer happens above it — baitfish suspend there, stripers and spotted bass stack just over it, and downlines fished below it come back empty. In November the surface cools enough that the column mixes top to bottom; that turnover briefly muddies clarity and scatters fish before winter patterns set.
