Chapter 01
The numbers.
Lake Norman covers approximately 32,000 acres of surface water — about 50 square miles — and holds roughly 1.1 trillion gallons at full pond. It runs about 34 miles from Cowans Ford Dam north to the upper Catawba arms above Troutman, and spans close to nine miles at its widest. Its shoreline, because the reservoir drowned a branching river valley rather than filling a basin, runs to roughly 520 miles.
